The difference isn’t unshakable confidence. It’s these five things that build a personal brand.
I keep getting asked: Am I building a personal brand the right way?
And honestly…most people are asking the wrong question.
Because “right” assumes there’s a manual. And, yes, there are a lot of books, podcasts and experts that claims to have the “secret formula.” But the truth is that what worked for Mel Robbins won’t work for you. What Gary Vee swears by might make you want to crawl under your desk.
But here’s what I’ve noticed after years of launching top luxury hotels, working with celebrity chefs, and preparing my clients to speak publicly. However, there are signals that indicate someone is ready to build their personal brand and break through.
The difference isn’t unshakable confidence. It’s owning your frequency while doing these five things:
1. Theyโre Willing to Evolve Their Message as They Learn What Lands
They post the Reel that flops. Head over to test TikTok even though it feels awkward. They know that one video with 47 views might teach them more than another month of “researching best practices.” They’re not married to their first version of anything, and they’re learning in public and adjusting as they go. In fact, Gary Vee posted over 1,000 wine videos before getting noticed. A thousand!
2. Theyโve Built in Nervous-System Support So Visibility Doesnโt Break Them
Because here’s the thing no one tells you when you start to build your personal brand: You’re likely going to feel disappointed a lot. If you publish your articles on Substack, you can feel like you’re writing to an empty room. You spend a day producing a YouTube video and only get 15 views. Even people will be weird. They’ll leave snarky comments. They’ll unsubscribe for no reason.
The people who last? They journal weekly or daily. Head down to the gym and walk out their frustrations. They send a voice note to their bestie when the panic hits. They’ve learned how to feel the feeling without letting it mean they should stop.
3. They Know Exactly Who Theyโre Talking to (And It Shows)
They’re not trying to help “everyone who struggles with their personal style.” They help petite curvy women in a new management role build a rising boss-up wardrobe that reflects their energetics. They’re specific. Almost annoyingly specific. And because of that, their people find them and say, “Oh my god, are you in my brain?”
4. Theyโre Not White-Knuckling the Development of Their Personal Brand Alone
They’re in a group program. They have a coach. Because trying to figure out your blind spots from inside your own head is like trying to cut your own hair. Sure, it’s technically possible, but why would you want to?
5. They’re Playing the Long Game
They’re not waiting to feel ready. They’ve decided to commit to building a personal brand. They know that polished brand photos are nice to have, but they don’t wait on them. Some of them don’t even launch a business with a website. They assess which tools are available to them right now and start building, knowing that they’re in it for the long haul.
So if you’re checking these boxes? You’re not just ready to build your personal brand.
You’re already doing it.
